Chemical Peels Q & A

Skinstyle Dermatology, Inc.

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels use different chemical or acid solutions to remove the outer layers of damaged skin, typically from your face, but they can also work on your neck and hands. The solution exfoliates your skin so the outer layers peel off, revealing younger, healthier skin beneath. The three basic types of chemical peels include:

  • Superficial peels that use a mild alpha-hydroxy acid to remove only the outer layer of skin
  • Medium peels that use glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid to penetrate the skin to remove outer and middle layers
  • Deep peels that use trichloroacetic acid or phenol to deeply penetrate and remove several layers of damaged skin

Superficial peels generally don’t require downtime, but medium and deep peels require up to several weeks for your skin to recover and reveal the healthier layers beneath. Dr. Colaço and the team at Skinstyle Dermatology offer light, moderate, or deep peels including:

  • Glycolic acid peels
  • Salicylic acid peels
  • Jessner combination peels
  • Jessner TCA 10
  • Jessner TCA 15
  • Jessner TCA 20
  • Perfect 10 Universal
  • Perfect 10 Intermediate and Advanced
  • TCA 100

After carefully examining your skin and talking to you about the issues you’d like to improve, Dr. Colaço recommends peels that will help you achieve the results you desire and fit into your busy lifestyle.

What skin concerns do chemical peels address?

Chemical peels can significantly reduce the appearance of:

  • Acne and acne scars
  • Melasma (areas of dark pigmentation)
  • Age spots and sun spots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Mildly sagging skin
  • Wrinkles
  • Crow’s feet and other fine lines
  • Rough, scaly patches of skin

Dr. Colaço and her aesthetics team can customize chemical peels to address your specific needs, such as scarring or dark pigmentation.

What can I expect after my chemical peel?

Depending on if you receive a light, moderate, or deep peel, you may have little to no downtime, or you may need a couple weeks to fully recover. Your skin may be red, flaky, and sensitive to the sun after your peel, so wearing moisturizers and sunscreen is essential for achieving the best results. Dr. Colaço and the team advise you on how to care for your skin after a chemical peel and support you in your home-care routine as you heal.

They also recommend using gentle skin care products and mineral makeup as your skin fully recovers, so as not to irritate your new, refreshed appearance.

If you want to get rid of acne scars and minimize wrinkles and lines or create a more even, glowing skin tone, a chemical peel may be right for you. Call the office to schedule a skin care consultation or use the online booking system.
