Botox is a form of purified botulinum toxin that’s FDA-approved to reduce facial lines when Dr. Colaço injects it into the areas around your eyes and forehead. Botox temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles to form, so it softens the appearance of lines and creases causes your skin to look smoother.
Typically, Botox injections reduce the appearance of forehead lines and crow’s feet around the outside of your eyes. They can also diminish frown lines between your eyebrows, help your eyebrows appear lifted, and treat downturned corners around your mouth. In addition to minimizing the signs of aging, Dr. Colaço may also use Botox to control excessive sweating (Hyperhydrosis) under your arms, on your palms, or on the soles of your feet.
Botox® injections are most often used in the upper third of the face but can also be used in other areas including but not limited to:
Dysport is a form of abobotulinumtoxinA that Dr. Colaço injects between your eyebrows to smooth the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines. Like Botox, Dysport temporarily reduces muscle movement in your forehead muscles so frown lines disappear, but your expressions don’t. After Dysport injections, you’re still able to make your usual facial expressions, only you’ll look younger when you do.
You may see some effect as early as 2 days following injection and it can take as long as 7 to 10 days to see the full effect.
The average duration of Botox® treatment is 3-4 months, although individual results may vary. When used to treat excess sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the underarms, palms, and soles, treatment can last significantly longer, sometimes 6 months or more.
Our goal with Botox® is to soften lines and wrinkles on your face by relaxing the muscles of facial expression. You will still be able to smile and scowl, and you should never look expressionless or “frozen.”
Botox® is injected with tiny (insulin) needles. This along with ice packs and a professional strength numbing cream which can be applied in advance to the skin, make the procedure almost painless. Dysport® has an excellent safety record in the hands of experienced, well-trained physicians (millions of patients have been treated worldwide). Most commonly, temporary mild swelling, pain, and bruising can occur at the site of injection. Consider reviewing our treatment tips for precautions to avoid/minimize bruising prior to your treatment. Uncommon but more serious side effects have been reported and include tiredness, double or blurred vision, headache, or eyelid droop.
Xeomin is an FDA-approved, highly purified neurotoxin. It’s like Botox, but since it’s missing a protein that’s in Botox, Xeomin is a purer form of the neurotoxin. When Dr. Colaço injects Xeomin into your facial muscles, it blocks the release of chemicals that allow your muscles to contract.
As a result, your frown lines appear smoother and softer. Treatment takes about 10-20 minutes, and you typically see a noticeable difference in the appearance of forehead lines and wrinkles 3-4 days after you receive Xeomin. The results usually last about three months.
With Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin, you’re temporarily altering the muscle contractions that lead to lines and wrinkles. Dr. Colaço offers all three treatments so you can choose which one delivers the results you are most happy with. Typically, you’ll need follow-up treatments every 3-4 months or so, to maintain your desired appearance.
Our body naturally produces sweat as a way to control body temperature and release excess substances or toxins. However, this mechanism is overactive in some individuals. Hyperhidrosis is the medical term used for excessive or abnormal sweating, independent of exposure to high temperatures. Commonly affected areas include the armpits, palms, and soles. Patients who have hyperhidrosis will often soak through clothing and visibly drip sweat. This can result in stained clothing, uncomfortable social encounters, and other negative, frustrating effects. Furthermore, over-the-counter antiperspirants are usually not effective in controlling this condition.
Botox really is a breakthrough treatment for patients suffering from hyperhidrosis. It works by blocking the overactive nerves that are responsible for stimulating your sweat glands. Keep in mind that sweating is prevented only in the areas that Botox is injected. It is currently FDA-approved for the treatment of underarms only, but commonly used off-label to treat palms and soles.
When used for hyperhidrosis, Botox may last up to six months. This is in comparison to Botox used for prevention of fine lines and wrinkles, which lasts an average of three months.
During your treatment, we will apply professional strength numbing cream to minimize discomfort. Skin cooling with cold air (Zimmer) and ice packs are also used to make the procedure as painless as possible. The treatment should take less than 20 minutes.
You may resume normal activities immediately after Botox treatment. A visible reduction of sweat in the area injected is achieved in approximately three to ten days. Unfortunately, Botox is not a permanent solution for hyperhidrosis and will require repeat treatments.
You may experience some redness, swelling, and/or bruising in the area, as with any treatment that requires the introduction of a needle into the skin. Consider reviewing our treatment tips (insert hyperlink) for precautions to avoid/minimize bruising prior to your treatment.
