What is microneedling?
Microneedling is the practice of creating microscopic pinpoint “wounds” in the skin which results in new elastin and collagen formation as wound healing occurs.
What is the Micropen?
The Micropen is an automated microneedling device that holds tiny sterile 12-needle cartridges. The needles can be used to pierce the skin at shorter (less aggressive) or deeper (more aggressive) depths depending on the goals of treatment. For example, shorter depths can be used to smooth skin superficially while deeper depths may be needed for acne scars.
What is the Micropen be used to treat?
The Micropen has recently become a popular treatment for acne scarring (often combined with fractional laser resurfacing treatments for maximum results). It can also be used to treat surgical or traumatic scars, sun damaged skin, wrinkles, and rough skin texture.
What happens during treatment?
A prescription strength numbing cream is applied to the skin prior to the procedure because the Micropen treatment at more aggressive depths is a bit uncomfortable. Less aggressive treatments feel like rubbing sandpaper against the skin. A typical treatment lasts between 10-15 minutes. The Micropen is a no-heat treatment that can be safely and successfully used on all skin types.
What can I expect post-treatment?
After a less aggressive treatment, your skin may feel warm and sensitive. Redness may persist for up to 2 days. More aggressive treatments can result in pinpoint bleeding (this stops almost immediately) and “bronzing” as pinpoints form dry crusts that eventually flake off. Your face may be temporarily swollen, and your skin may feel warm, sensitive, and tight. Sun protection and gentle skin care is recommended for the next week as your skin heals – see treatment tips for more information.
When will I see results?
Microneedling will require several treatments over 3-6 months to get effective results (this is not a very strong treatment, the benefit being it has minimal to no downtime). For this reason, however, microneedling is more commonly used as an adjunct treatment to enhance fractional laser resurfacing treatments for acne scarring.
Why choose the Micropen?
Microneedling is a safe and effective option for treating scars, etc. in patients who do not want to risk heat-induced pigmentation; patients with darker pigmented skin are at higher risk for this particular laser complication. Microneedling is also significantly more affordable than laser treatments as the cost of the equipment is not a consideration.
