What is Kybella?
Kybella is the first FDA-approved, non-invasive injectable agent indicated for the treatment of submental fat, often referred to as “chin fat” or “a double chin.” By reducing undesirable moderate to severe submental fullness, Kybella can improve both frontal and side facial profiles. Finally, there is a non-surgical alternative to chin liposuction that is both safe and efficacious!
How does Kybella treat chin fat?
Kybella improves the appearance of moderate to severe fullness associated with submental fat by destroying fat cells in injected areas. The main active ingredient in Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is naturally used in the emulsification of fats in the human body during digestion. The destroyed fat cells are eventually absorbed and removed by the body like other waste. While Kybella destruction and removal of fat cells is permanent, it will not prevent expansion of any remaining fat cells after treatment if weight gain, etc. occurs.
How many Kybella treatments are necessary and how long will it last?
Kybella is a semi-permanent procedure, as it is dependent on each patient’s individual response to treatment as well as their lifestyle. If a patient tends to fluctuate in weight, they will likely need more treatments. Moreover, wearing sunscreen and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption will help to preserve results. We recommend three to four treatments spaced six weeks apart to achieve the best results.
What can I expect during treatment?
Professional strength numbing cream and skin cooling with cold air and ice packs are provided to make your procedure virtually painless. The procedure itself takes just a few minutes.
What can I expect post-treatment?
You may resume normal activities immediately after receiving a Kybella treatment. Swelling is the most common post-treatment side effect and typically starts to occur within minutes of the procedure. Keep in mind the more swelling you get, the better result you are likely to have! The swelling can last for up to 2-3 weeks. While much less likely, you may also experience some numbness in the injected area. If this occurs, it can last for up to 2-3 months.
Are there potential side effects?
Kybella has an excellent safety record in the hands of experienced, well-trained physicians. You may see some redness, swelling, and/or bruising in the area, as with any treatment that requires the introduction of a needle into the skin. Consider reviewing our Treatment Tips for precautions to avoid/minimize bruising prior to your treatment.
