What is Voluma©?
Voluma© is the latest hyaluronic acid gel-based filler released by the makers of the Juvederm© line of products. Hyaluronic acid is an important biological component of the dermal layer of skin, which contributes to skin firmness, structure, and volume. Over time, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our skin decreases along with fat, soft tissue, and bony support which results in a significant loss of volume and a more aged appearance to the face. Voluma, as its name suggests, provides volume to areas that have deflated over time, restoring a smoother, more youthful contour to the face.
How does Voluma© differ from Juvederm© Ultra XC and other hyaluronic acid fillers?
The composition of Voluma, as compared to other products in the Juvederm family, results in a thicker, longer-lasting gel-based filler that is best injected into a deeper plane of skin. Accordingly, Voluma’s ability to correct significant volume loss and lift sagging tissues is superior to many of the other hyaluronic acid fillers.
What areas can be treated with Voluma©?
Although it is FDA approved for use only in the cheek, it is sometimes used off-label to replace volume in other areas such as the chin and jawline.
How long does Voluma© last?
Voluma© is gradually broken down in the skin over an average of 18-24 months, although individual results may vary. A potential benefit of using hyaluronic acid-based fillers is the availability of hyaluronidase (an anecdote, essentially), which can be injected into the skin and quickly breaks down the product.
Are There Any Side Effects of Voluma©?
Voluma© is formulated with lidocaine to make the injection experience more comfortable. Ice packs, prescription-strength numbing cream, and/or nerve blocks are also available to decrease discomfort. Hyaluronic acid fillers have an excellent safety record in the hands of experienced, well-trained physicians. Most commonly, temporary mild swelling and bruising can occur.
