Top 10 Post Summer Skin Tips

The lazy days of summer are made for relaxing and having fun… but they can take a toll on your skin’s health and beauty. But not all hope is lost! Here are our top 10 BEST end-of-summer skin care tips for gorgeous, spot-free skin.

 

#1. SUNSPOTS

The fix. Did fun in the sun leave your skin with sunspots, freckles, and blotches? At Skinstyle, we use prescription strength glycolic acid, hydroquinone, and retinoids to reverse aging and leave your skin with a healthy glow. We love the professional-strength chemical peels that can refresh your skin with little or no downtime. In-office intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments are another option for treating red and brown discoloration. Over-the-counter vitamin C serums (to brighten) and creams with retinol (to increase cell turnover and get rid of brown spots faster) can enhance the effects of in-office treatments. Of course, prevention is key, so don’t forget to use sunscreen daily even if you’re not planning on being out in the sun (UVA goes through windows and clouds…)! At Skinstyle, we favor “physical blockers” (commonly referred to as “mineral” or “natural” sunscreens) which contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide because they are more effective at protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

 

#2. ACNE

The fix. One of the most common post-summer skin complaints! Heat, humidity, and yes, even diet can all trigger acne flares. Over-the-counter acne remedies include salicylic acid and sulfur washes, benzoyl peroxide spot treatments, and retinoid-containing creams (e.g. Differin). At Skinstyle, we use a retinoid in almost every acne patient because it treats blackheads, whiteheads and even cystic acne – not to mention the anti-wrinkle benefits! For moderate to severe acne, retinoids are often prescribed in combination with antibiotics and other non-antibiotic oral medications. We also offer light-based therapy (blue and infrared) as an alternative or add-on treatment for mild to moderate acne.

 

#3. WORRISOME MOLES

#4. ROUGH AND TOUGH FEET

The fix. Did wearing cute sandals all summer leave your feet less than soft and smooth? Try using an over-the-counter lactic acid-based moisturizer such as Amlactin, which can exfoliate and hydrate even the roughest spots. Love DIY? Try mixing equal parts hot water and milk (which also contains lactic acid!), add some sugar crystals, and soak your feet for 10-15 minutes. Then you can scrub the softened skin with an exfoliating file or stone. Pat dry, apply petrolatum (e.g. Vaseline), and sleep in your comfiest socks. Repeat 1-2 times per week to maintain baby-soft soles.

 

#5. CHAPPED LIPS

The fix. Signs of sun damage on your lips include cracking, roughness, or persistent dryness. Use a deeply moisturizing and hypoallergenic lip quencher with petrolatum or hyaluronic acid, and protect your lips from future harm by using a lip balm with built-in UVA/UVB protection.

 

#6. CLOGGED PORES

The fix. Pores can appear more prominent as makeup and dirt mix with sweat to fill them up. Try exfoliating on a regular basis with a glycolic acid (aka alpha hydroxy acid) or salicylic acid (beta hydroxy acid) cleanser or with an exfoliating brush (such as Clarisonic) to deep clean your pores. Consistent use of a prescription topical retinoid can also minimize the appearance of pores over time.

 

#7. FINE LINES AND WRINKLES

The fix. Sun-induced premature fine lines and wrinkles: another great reason to protect your skin from the sun (as if skin cancer wasn’t good enough)! Look for moisturizers and serums that contain retinol, glycolic acid, or hyaluronic acid which smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. (fun fact: hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the skin, holds up to 1000 times its weight in water, and, as with everything, diminishes with age.)

 

#8. SUNBURN

The fix. In an ideal world, we would apply (and re-apply!) sunscreen every 80 minutes while wearing protective clothing and hats, and avoiding the sun from 10 AM – 2 PM. But when you’re having fun in the ever-present California sunshine, it’s easy to forget! If you do end up with a sunburn, try cool compresses to reduce heat in the skin followed by a moisturizer containing ceramides, aloe vera, glycerin or oatmeal. For painful sunburns, try using a small amount of over the counter hydrocortisone 1% cream for a few days. We at Skinstyle can prescribe a stronger cream to speed healing. If skin has started to peel, petrolatum-based products (e.g. vaseline) can provide a barrier that helps healing. Taking ibuprofen or another over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine can also help to reduce redness, swelling, and discomfort, but consider seeing a dermatologist if your sunburn is this bad. And don’t forget to hydrate!

 

#9. ROSACEA

The fix. Rosacea often flares with the summer heat, as hot temperatures and sunlight are among its many triggers (which also include hot liquids, alcohol, spicy foods, and stress). At Skinstyle, we prescribe a combination of anti-inflammatory oral medications and topical creams. Once your rosacea is under control, we find a maintenance regimen that is customized to your skin, and prevents the long-term effects of continued inflammation.

 

#10. THICK, LEATHERY SKIN

The fix. A lifetime of sun can leave you with thickened skin that has a rough texture. Laser resurfacing treatments (ex. Resurfx) can visibly improve skin texture and color with minimal downtime. Often, we combine Resurfx with IPL to maximize the effects on red and brown discoloration. Topical treatments can be used prior to or in combination with laser and light based treatments.
